About us

A hotel with a story

Stocks Hotel has been part of Sark’s hospitality heritage for generations, welcoming travellers to the island with warmth, comfort, and timeless charm.

The original farmhouse was built in 1741 and the hotel has evolved over the years while remaining true to its character and sense of place. Today, it continues to reflect the spirit of Sark — peaceful, unhurried, and wonderfully untouched.

Quiet luxury & natural beauty

Surrounded by lush gardens and set within one of the world’s most unspoilt island landscapes.

Our History

A legacy steeped in time

The story of Stocks begins long before modern travel. There is evidence of medieval monastic buildings on this very site, and the oldest surviving parts of the current buildings date from around 1741, when a farmhouse was built near fertile land and one of Sark’s most reliable wells.

Early Beginnings

There is evidence that medieval monastic buildings once stood on this land, marking the earliest known chapter of the site’s story.

The oldest surviving parts of the present buildings date from around 1741, when a traditional farmhouse was constructed near fertile land and one of Sark’s most reliable wells — an essential resource in island life.

Over time, the property gradually expanded. Stables were added in 1800, followed by the Dower House in 1850, shaping much of the structure that guests recognise today.

Becoming a Hotel

In 1895, the farmhouse entered a new chapter and opened as a hotel, welcoming travellers to experience Sark’s dramatic landscapes and peaceful charm.

From 1900 to 1925, the hotel was owned by Mr and Mrs Harry Stock — the family name that the hotel proudly carries to this day. Their stewardship helped establish Stocks as one of the island’s most respected places to stay.

Stocks has remained in family hands since 1925, passing from the Falle family to the Armorgie family, and today continuing under the stewardship of the Magell family.

Stocks Hotel has long been one of Sark’s most cherished destinations, welcoming guests who return year after year for its warm hospitality and tranquil atmosphere.

Stocks Hotel operates off-grid, generating its own electricity and heating the swimming pool through solar power. We use separate water systems, with dedicated sources for drinking water and recycled water for the gardens, ensuring responsible resource management across the property. Our triple-filtered drinking water is served in reused bottles, reducing waste and maximising quality, whilst our state-of-the-art biodigester sewage system minimises environmental impact

Adjacent to the swimming pool is allegedly the oldest mulberry tree in the Channel Islands.

Permaculture Gardens

The gardens at Stocks Hotel are one of the island’s most treasured spaces. Winding paths, vibrant seasonal planting, and peaceful corners invite guests to wander, pause, and unwind.

Horse & Carriage

At Stocks Hotel, Sark’s oldest hotel, we are pleased to offer a perfect tour of the island by horse & carriage using Stocks own private stables. Our carriages are available for any island visitors whether staying at Stocks Hotel or not.
